Bugeishi Aikido

Dojo Etiquette

  1. To serve the club as a minimum each member is required to either put the mats down prior to the start of the session or to put them away at the end of the session.
  2. Try to be on the mat and ready to commence training before the instructor starts the class.  This for several reasons, firstly to show respect for the instructor and your fellow students.  Secondly it ensures that you warm up sufficiently to participate fully and safely in the class.  Finally, timing is part of the discipline of training.
  3. Never walk on the mats with any footwear on.  This is to preserve the mats but perhaps more importantly it is to show respect for the training area.
  4. Bow upon stepping onto and leaving the mat.  Again, this is to show respect to the instructor and fellow students but also it starts to prepare you for the training to come.
  5. Once a session has started do not step on or off the mat until invited to do so by the instructor.  The instructor is responsible for everything that goes on during the session and therefore he or she needs to know who is present at all times.
  6. Make sure the dojo is clean and always treat the dojo with respect.
