On initiating and receiving technique

  • Learning how and when to effectively and efficiently strike is an essential and often undervalued element of the study of Aikido
  • You cannot choose to effectively and efficiently strike someone unless you have trained do it
  • You cannot choose to not to strike someone unless you can effectively do it
  • Always temper your attack to the level of the ability of the person you are training with
  • Attack with honesty and a desire to serve the person you are training with, never allow your ego or knowledge of what is to come interfere with the integrity of the study at hand
  • Learning how and when to breakfall is an essential and often undervalued element of the study of Aikido
  • Never breakfall into an attack or attack from an ineffective distance
  • To be chosen to receive technique for a demonstration is an honour, do not waste this by not taking the opportunity to consciously feel what is being demonstrated
  • When attacking you are effectively lending your body to allow the other person to study Aikido and you have a every right to expect the response to controlled, in accordance with the response agreed and most importantly with your safety as a paramount concern
